Alfred Henry Ackley

Alfred Henry Ackley (1887–1960) was an American composer and hymn writer, primarily recognized for his contributions to gospel music. Born in Pennsylvania, he was educated at the New England Conservatory of Music and later became a prominent figure in the early 20th-century Christian music scene. Ackley’s work often blended traditional hymnal forms with contemporary influences, making his compositions accessible and appealing to a wide audience. One of his most notable works is "He Lives," written in 1933, which celebrates the resurrection of Christ and remains a staple in many churches today. His other significant compositions include "I Serve a Risen Savior," and "The Savior is Waiting." Ackley was also known for his role as a music educator and his involvement in various religious institutions, where he encouraged the use of contemporary music in worship. His impact on gospel music is evident in the way his hymns continue to be sung in congregations and his influence on subsequent generations of hymn writers and gospel musicians. Ackley’s innovative approach helped to shape modern worship music, bridging the gap between traditional hymns and the evolving sound of 20th-century gospel.
